Wikipedia’s volunteer editors are standing guard against a new kind of threat—one that doesn’t vandalize or troll, but quietly slips in through plausible writing with fabricated citations and subtle inaccuracies.

This modern plague of “AI slop,” as some call it, is prompting an emergency response from the site’s human guardians. Over recent months, hundreds of potentially AI-tainted articles have been flagged and labeled with warnings, and a town-hall-style WikiProject AI Cleanup has formed to tackle the problem head-on.

The rise of AI-generated misinformation isn’t just a blip—it’s a parade of cleverly disguised errors. Princeton researchers found that about 5% of new English articles in August 2024 had suspicious AI fingerprints—everything from odd location mistakes to entirely fictional entries. That’s enough to give any casual reader pause.

Wikipedia may not ban AI use outright, but the message from its volunteer community is both quiet and urgent: reliability doesn’t come without human oversight. “People really, really trust Wikipedia,” noted AI policy researcher Lucie-Aimée Kaffee, “and that’s something we shouldn’t erode.

What’s Being Done—And What Might Come Next

In a novel wrinkle, articles flagged as potentially AI authored now come with warning labels—right at the top—such as “This text may incorporate output from a large language model.” The message is clear: proceed with caution.

This identification work falls to WikiProject AI Cleanup, a dedicated task force of volunteers armed with guidelines, formatting cues, and linguistic signals—like overuse of em dashes or the word “moreover”—to root out ghostwriting from AI. These aren’t rules for deletion, but red flags that trigger closer review or speedy deletion under updated policies.

Meanwhile, the Wikimedia Foundation is cautious about over-leveraging AI. A much-discussed experiment with AI-generated article summaries was shelved amid backlash, and instead, the Foundation is developing user-facing tools like Edit Check and Paste Check to help new editors align submissions with citation and tone standards. The message: we’ll bend tech to serve humans—not replace them.

Why This Matters—More Than Just Wikipedia

For many, Wikipedia is the gateway to instant knowledge—and that makes this “cleanup drive” about more than accuracy. It’s about preserving the essence of how knowledge is built and trusted online. With AI tools churning out content at scale, the risk of building castles on sand grows—unless human editors stay vigilant.

This effort could become a template for content integrity across the web. Elite librarians, journalists, and educators often look to Wikipedia’s playbook for moderating user-generated content. If its volunteers can outpace the surge of sloppy AI content, they’re not just saving wiki pages—they’re helping safeguard the internet’s collective conscience.

Citing old facts is easy. Protecting truth in the age of AI takes community, nuance, and unglamorous labor. On Wikipedia, that labor still belongs to us.
